5 Tips to Help You Select the Perfect Frame for Your Holiday Photos

5 Tips to Help You Select the Perfect Frame for Your Holiday Photos

Now that the holidays are over, many people are happy to have had the chance to spend time with friends and family. Photographs are the perfect way to make those happy memories last. The holiday season is a time when there always seems to be a camera present. Going through those photos to select your favorite shots is always a fun way to start the New Year and to plan for unique gift ideas. The following tips can help you choose the best possible frames for those holiday photos.

Use Twine or Washi Tape for Temporary Framing

For photos that will only be on display for a short period of time, an informal framing arrangement is a fun and simple option. Twine, ribbon or string can be used to draw attention to snapshots that are mounted on a wall. It's also possible to use small decorative clips to attach the photos directly to the string or twine, giving a cute clothesline effect. This is perfect for a child's room or to decorate an otherwise unused area of a kitchen or hallway. For a more tailored look, washi tape can be used to create geometric shapes in virtually any color combination.

Combine Shapes, Sizes and Orientation

For a dramatic statement effect, select frames in the same color but in different shapes and sizes. Make sure that some are hung using a horizontal orientation while others are vertical. This technique helps draw attention to a focal area of a room, such as over a mantel or couch. Be sure to group photos that are similar in composition, color or subject to create a cohesive appeal.

An excellent way to highlight family photos is to mount them onto a non-traditional surface. Sanded (or rough-hewn) blocks of wood are great backgrounds, as are cut-out sections of grass matting or colored acrylic.

Choose a "Non-Frame" Frame

An excellent way to highlight family photos is to mount them onto a non-traditional surface. Sanded (or rough-hewn) blocks of wood are great backgrounds, as are cut-out sections of grass matting or colored acrylic. The key here is to pair photos with surfaces that are completely unrelated, such as a romantic wedding photo on a square of reclaimed barn wood. The contrast will make the photo even more visually appealing.

Find Out Just How Much Size Matters

Take a picture or a cropped portion of it, and have a professional photography shop enlarge it and print it onto a piece of stretched canvas. The result is a larger-than-life piece of art that can enliven an empty wall. The canvas can be mounted directly to the wall's surface or simply left leaning at an angle.
