Frame and Mirror Cleaning Secrets From the Pros

Frame and Mirror Cleaning Secrets From the Pros

?Spring is here! Now is the perfect time to get your home back into shape. This year, don't forget how important it is to clean your mirrors and glass picture frames. Follow the steps below to learn how to clean any mirror or frame the right way.

How to Clean a Mirror the Right Way

Most store cleaners leave your mirror streaked, cloudy and sticky. But once you know the secrets of cleaning your home's mirrors the correct way, keeping them bright and streak-free is quick and easy.

  1. Determine your mirror's glazing type. Depending on its type of glazing, you should use different cleaners. Use an anti-static acrylic cleaner on acrylic glazing. Try a general glass cleaner for glass glazing and for any other delicate glazing, always use a microfiber cloth with a ratio of 1 to 1 water and isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Spray a lint-free (preferably a microfiber) cloth with your cleaner. Make sure the cloth is not over saturated with your cleaner. Never spray directly on the mirror to avoid any excess cleaner from running down the mirror and pooling on the frame. Start in the top left corner and wipe across to the top right corner. Use a fanning motion to move from the top of the mirror to the bottom making sure you wipe down every inch of the mirror's surface.

How to Clean Frames

Keep your frames free from dust and dirt by learning how you should clean them.

  1. Use a feather duster to remove any visible dust from the frame.
  2. Identify the material of the frame and then follow the individual cleaning suggestions below for your frame's material.
  • Metal Frames: Don't apply any cleaner. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth to polish the frame.
  • Sprayed Frames: Spray a soft, clean, lint-free cloth with glass or acrylic cleaner.
  • Wooden Frames: There is no need to use a cleaner. Instead, gently polish the frame with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Gilded Frames: The key to cleaning a gilded frame is to be as gentle as possible. Unless there is noticeable dirt, there is no need to use anything more than a feather duster.
  • Acrylic Frames: Use an anti-static acrylic cleaner on a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.
